Black Out the Vote
Black Out the Vote
#BlackOutTheVote is a nonpartisan campaign led by Penumbra Center for Racial Healing (formerly Penumbra Theatre) with a goal of increasing voter turnout among Black, Latinx, Indigenous and other historically disadvantaged communities by removing a barrier to voting – the need to choose between earning a paycheck and casting a ballot.
It was sparked by a finding that in America, work keeps twice as many Black and Latinx voters from the polls as white voters.
We asked business owners to stand with Penumbra by pledging to give employees paid time off to vote, ensuring all employees an equal opportunity to make their voices heard.
Additionally, we asked businesses to use our #BlackOutTheVote social and physical toolkits to raise awareness, show solidarity and encourage other businesses to join the movement before and on Election Day. Physical kits included screen-printed posters and other materials for businesses to “black out” their storefronts, turning them into street-level billboards.
The campaign was executed across multiple other mediums, including a website, wild postings, custom black “I Voted” stickers, social media posts and shareable assets, OOH and more, with resources donated by companies that supported our cause.
